Reed beds
The poop on the sludge in New Paltz
It is worth the
visit to get a tour of the Village of New Paltz sewage treatment plant from
manager Chris Yaeger to observe the phragmites reed beds that were installed to
take process our sludge naturally on site so we don't have to pay thousands of
dollars to have it carted to a dump in New Jersey. They're just like the ones in
Lloyd (the next town over) except that they’re smaller and less successful so
far. Still, very few municipalities have them, and individual homes could have
them instead of septic tanks. Tours are offered through SUNY professors or the
EnCC.
